15 forgotten Nigerian musicians

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

Consistency is the major key to being relevant in the Nigerian music industry.

15. Korede Bello

The ‘Godwin’ and ‘Dorobucci’ stories cannot be as Korede entered into the Nigerian scene as a sweet
heart and was a teenage crush to almost every Nigerian girl. These days, we only hear about
marketing roll-out from Mavin about the jerry-curled vocalist.

14. Mr. 2kay

As talented as Southern artists break into the crowded music industry, Mr. 2kay managed to be
relevant and sold out his homecoming concert in Port Harcourt last year. He eventually parted ways
his former label, Grafton Records and enjoyed rendezvous with top politicians and his career has
never been the same since the aftermath of the elections.

13. Di’ja

The lanky but pretty singer is another Mavin we haven’t heard from in recent times. She wedded
secretly in her hometown of Kaduna, Nigeria. Amidst reports of her child delivery, we are still
waiting up for a follow-up of her break-out success.

12. Ice Prince

Fan-favourite and sweet boy, Ice Prince enjoyed a prolific career to up to three years and eventually
lost it along the way. The Jos-native started off as a brilliant Afro-rapper but got entagled in the Afro-
pop genre, a genre which is suspected to be his downfall and it is imminent that his career might
have hit the rocks, even though he had the most Spotify streams as a Nigerian rapper in the closing
quarter of 2018.

11. Yonda

After he jointly co-wrote with Peruzzi on most of the DMW anthems and Mayorkun’s ‘The Mayor of
Lagos’ LP last year, he has gone missing on music platforms, despite a great introductory year in the
industry, with his unique vocals.

10. Ichaba

Ichaba had two songs with Dremo and was opportune to jump on DMW as an affiliate artist.
Shockingly, he has disappeared both in the music scene and at DMW.

9. Seyi Shay

Tagged as the ‘Nigerian Ciara’ by many critics and admirers of her music, especially for her seductive
style of music and fashion. Her career can be dubbed as a makeshift to her female counterparts,
Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade and that could be the reason her sound has stalled for some time now.

8. Humblesmith

Humblesmith received major applause for his sound and the indigenous audience after
‘Osinachi’ and the remix with Davido. He went on to collaborate with Tiwa Savage, a failed
plot to carve out a romantic affair between the two – the man has been missing ever since.

7. Praiz

Being Simi’s labelmate has been a hindrance to Praiz career that once blossomed, not until
recently when Simi closed doors on X3M music after her contract ended. It would be
exciting to see Praiz and his music blow up one more time.

6. Cynthia Morgan

The dancehall singer was doing great at a point and went missing after sometime. With
news of her affair with Burna Boy and ejection from her luxury apartment due to failure to
pay rents, her career has definitely been cut short.

5. Lil Kesh

Lil Kesh came into the Nigerian music scene, acting as second fiddle to Olamide and it worked out for
him. After the release of his ‘YAGI’ LP, his decision to start his only imprint has not been the worst
decision he has must have made. His music for the past two years has been questionable.

4. Idowest

Idowest failed to release tangible projects when the ‘shaku shaku’ trend came to limelight. He was
rather relied on that attention and did not follow up that ground-breaking moment. For the record,
Idowest signed three contracts with three different labels in the past three years.

3. Skales

Skales talent was evident in the way he was able to sing and rap at the same time during his EME
days. Skales played a great part in crating major EME hits back in the days. He also enjoyed
bromance with Burna Boy in 2017. His music has been tiring and boring of late.

2. Oritsefemi

The Ajegunle lover and promoter of indigenous and classic sounds did a good job by
harnessing his songs to a wide audience even when it looked his return to the music scene
was bleak. He conquered playlists and charts and he has gone off radars once again.

1. Shaydee

Shaydee will be remembered as the musician that undeservedly won the headies for the
‘Best vocal performance’ at the 2016 Headies award. Shaydee received that accolade and
his vocals have fainted out.
